About

The Roman Theatre in Bregenz, located in the Thalbach quarter of Vorarlberg, Austria, is an archaeological site dating back to the Roman era. Known as Brigantium in Roman times, this theatre was constructed to accommodate over 2000 spectators, indicating its significant role in the region. Built primarily with locally sourced rounded stones and wood, the theatre's design features a semi-circular cavea with rising tiers and entrances known as vomitoria. While specific functions of the theatre remain unclear, it likely hosted civic and commemorative events, as well as sacred ceremonies, similar to other Roman theatres. Despite its size surpassing the local population's needs, the theatre's strategic location near Lake Constance and the Bregenzer Ach river enhanced its importance for regional Roman activities.
