About

The bourse at Antwerp, inaugurated in 1531, is recognized as the world’s first purpose-built commodity exchange, making it a pivotal site in the history of global trade. Initially designed in Brabant's late Gothic style by Domien de Waghemakere, the structure featured a covered colonnade with vaults and served as a model for subsequent exchanges, including London's Royal Exchange. Over the centuries, the building experienced significant events, including fires in 1583 and 1858, leading to reconstructions that maintained its historical essence while incorporating modern architectural techniques. Archaeological findings during recent renovations revealed Iron Age urns and medieval structural remnants, highlighting the site’s long-standing significance. Today, after extensive renovations, it functions as the Antwerp Trade Fair, a multipurpose events venue, reflecting its enduring legacy in commerce and architecture.
