About

Mogorjelo is a significant archaeological site featuring a Roman villa rustica dating back to the early 4th century CE. Situated on a hill in Bosnia and Herzegovina, it highlights the Roman architectural prowess with its complex of agricultural and residential buildings. Initially constructed by an Italic settler in the mid-1st century CE, the site saw transformations over the centuries, including a state-owned estate built over previous ruins. Notably, the site contains defensive structures and two basilicas from the mid-5th century CE, reflecting its changing functions through time. The presence of Carolingian artifacts suggests continued habitation into the 9th century. Mogorjelo's historical importance is underscored by its designation as a National Monument, offering insights into Roman life and subsequent cultural shifts in the region.
