About
The Aleksandrovo tomb is a significant archaeological site situated in South-Eastern Bulgaria, dating back to the early 4th century BCE. It is a Thracian burial mound featuring a tomb that was uncovered in 2000. The tomb comprises a round chamber approximately 3 meters in diameter, connected to an antechamber and a 6-meter long tunnel. Notable for its well-preserved frescoes, the site reflects artistic influences from Late Classical and Early Hellenistic periods. These frescoes depict scenes such as a hunting scene, symbolizing themes of power and mythology with figures like Zalmoxis, the Thracian solar deity. The tomb provides insights into the cultural transformations of the Thracian people, such as the adoption of Greek-style clothing and footwear. The site has been recognized for its cultural significance and has been awarded the European Heritage Label.
