About
The Old City of Luoyang, located 15 kilometers east of modern Luoyang, served as the capital of the Northern Wei dynasty and underwent significant reconstruction under Emperor Yang of Sui in 605 CE. The site retains the layout from the Northern Wei era, with substantial remnants like the inner and outer city walls, Yongning Temple, and various civic and religious structures. Spanning about 75 square kilometers, it includes significant archaeological finds such as ceramics, iron wares, and coins, reflecting its historical prominence. Recognized for its cultural importance, the site is protected as a national heritage site and forms part of the UNESCO Silk Roads World Heritage designation, illustrating its vital role in historical trade and cultural exchange.
