About

The Cojines del Zaque are two circular sandstone stones located in Tunja, Boyacá, part of the Muisca Confederation's territory. These stones served a significant ritual purpose in the worship practices of the Muisca people, dedicated to their primary deities, the Sun god Sué and the Moon goddess Chía. Positioned with solar alignment, the stones were a focal point for religious ceremonies conducted by the zaque, including daily prayers and important agricultural rituals aligned with the Muisca calendar. The site also bore witness to more somber rituals, such as human sacrifices, reflecting the deep spiritual and cultural traditions of the Muisca civilization. The Cojines del Zaque thus provide valuable insights into the religious life of the Muisca during the Late Post-Classical Period, before the Spanish conquest of the region.
