About
Tierradentro, located in the mountains of southwest Colombia, is an archaeological site known for its elaborate underground tombs, or hypogea, which were constructed by the Tierradentro culture. This culture, a part of the broader San Agustín cultural tradition, flourished from around 200 BCE and continued into the 17th century CE. The hypogea are characterized by their westward-facing entrances, spiral staircases, and main chambers situated 5 to 8 meters below the surface. These burial chambers feature intricate murals with geometric, anthropomorphic, and zoomorphic designs in red, black, and white. Despite historical grave robbing, the site remains a significant testament to pre-Columbian art and social customs. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, the Tierradentro National Archaeological Park preserves this unique cultural heritage, attracting visitors worldwide.
