About

El-Gabal el-Ahmar, also known as 'The Red Hill', is an ancient quarry site located within modern-day Cairo's boundaries in Nasr City. This site was of significant importance during the times of Akhenaton, Amenhophis III, Tutankhamon, and Ramses III, primarily utilized for its quartzite sandstone. The quarry was notably directed by figures such as Huy, the 'Chief of the King's Works', and Hori. The quartzite sandstone extracted from El-Gabal el-Ahmar was likely used in the construction of the Colossi of Memnon, showcasing the site's contribution to significant architectural projects in ancient Egypt. As an archaeological site, it provides insights into the industrial and craft practices of the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age, specifically during the 14th to 12th centuries BCE.
