About
El Matareya is a district in Cairo that houses the ruins of the ancient city of Heliopolis, which was a significant urban center during Egypt's Pharaonic period. The site is particularly renowned for its religious structures, including the Temple of Ra-Atum built by Pharaoh Senusret I and the remains of a sun temple from the era of Ramses II. The area features the Masalla Obelisk, an impressive remnant of Heliopolis's past grandeur. Additionally, the site holds a necropolis with tombs from the Middle and New Kingdoms, as well as from the Sixth Dynasty. A pilgrimage site known as the Tree of the Virgin Mary adds spiritual significance to this historically rich area.
