Historical Context

About

Matara is a significant archaeological site located in Eritrea's Debub Region. It was an important city in both the Dʿmt and Aksumite kingdoms, showcasing a millennium of habitation. The site features the prominent Hawulti monument, a pre-Aksumite or early Aksumite obelisk, and is notable for its role as a trade hub on the route connecting Aksum to its port city, Adulis. This historical city provides insight into ancient trade networks and the cultural exchanges of the time. Despite its archaeological importance, efforts to repatriate artifacts removed during previous excavations continue to face challenges. Matara remains an intriguing window into the region's rich ancient history.
