About
Lillebonne, located in northern France, is an archaeological site of significant historical importance, primarily showcasing remnants from its Roman past. Initially the capital of the Caletes tribe, it was transformed into the Roman city of Juliobona by Augustus in the 1st century CE. The city was a vital hub in the Roman Empire, with roads branching in all directions, connecting it to other important locations. Notable archaeological features include the remains of Roman baths, a large theatre, and a mosaic depicting a deer hunt. The city was destroyed in the mid-2nd century but saw further activity during the barbarian invasions of 273 CE when its theatre was repurposed into a fortress. These elements provide valuable insights into the urban and social structure of Roman Gaul.
