About
Vaison-la-Romaine is an archaeological site in southeastern France, renowned for its rich Roman and medieval heritage. Initially inhabited during the Late Bronze Age, it became the capital of the Celtic Vocontii tribe in the 4th century BCE. The Roman conquest in the 2nd century BCE initiated a period of significant development, marked by the construction of public infrastructure such as theatres, aqueducts, and bridges. The site flourished during the Pax Romana, becoming one of the wealthiest cities in Gallia Narbonensis. Despite suffering from barbarian invasions in the late Roman period, it emerged as a prominent Christian center by the 4th century CE. The city's defensive structures, including ramparts and castles, reflect its strategic importance and tumultuous history. Today, Vaison-la-Romaine offers a glimpse into ancient urban life through its well-preserved ruins, mosaics, and statuary, making it a significant archaeological and historical landmark.
