Notably, the site is associated with the Roman city-fortress of Petra, founded in the 6th century CE and later demolished to prevent its capture during the Lazic War. The site contains a 6th-century basilica with a mosaic floor and other structures dating to Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. Artifacts such as the Tsikhisdziri treasure, including jewelry and coins, highlight the area's historical significance.
