Historical Context

About

Tell Rashid is an archaeological site located in the Diyala Governorate of Iraq, characterized by its mound-like structure indicative of an Ubaid period settlement. Situated near the Zagros Mountains, the site was excavated in 1978 as part of salvage operations for the Hemrin Dam project. Archaeologists uncovered four distinct occupation levels dating back to the Ubaid period, approximately 5500-5000 BCE. The oldest level features mudbrick foundations, while subsequent levels revealed tripartite Ubaid houses, child burials, and architectural details like buttressed facades, suggesting specialized structures. The site yielded numerous artifacts, including painted pottery, clay figurines, and tools. These findings contribute valuable insights into Ubaid architectural styles, domestic life, and material culture.
