About
Jarmuth is an ancient Amorite city located near present-day Beit Shemesh in Israel. This site, also known as Tel Yarmuth, played a historically significant role during the Late Bronze Age, particularly in the events involving the Israelite settlement of Canaan. As recorded in the Hebrew Bible, Jarmuth's king, Piram, was part of a coalition of five Amorite kings that opposed the Israelites due to their treaty with Gibeon. The city is identified with a modern archaeological site that has yielded insights into the region's urban and political landscape during this period. Notably, Jarmuth is also mentioned in association with the Levitical city within the territory of the Tribe of Issachar, although its exact location remains uncertain. The site's significance is underscored by its role in biblical history and its contribution to our understanding of ancient Canaanite and Israelite interactions.
