About

Khirbet er-Ra'i is an archaeological site in the Shephelah region of Israel, characterized by its Canaanite roots with significant Philistine influence. Located strategically 4 km west of Lachish, the site played a vital role post the fall of Canaanite Lachish in the late 12th century BCE. Excavations have revealed remains dating from the Late Bronze Age through the Early Iron Age, providing insights into the area's historical continuity. Notably, a proto-Canaanite inscription was discovered on a jar, suggesting cultural and historical links to the biblical period of Judges. This site, believed by some to be ancient Ziklag, is significant for understanding the region's transition from Canaanite to Philistine dominance and the broader socio-political landscape of ancient Israel.
