About
Dhiban, an archaeological site in Jordan, exhibits an extensive history of occupation spanning over 5,000 years. Situated along the ancient King's Highway, this site has served as a strategic and cultural hub from the Early Bronze Age through to the Contemporary Period. Notably, it was a prominent settlement during the reign of Mesha, a Moabite king in the 9th century BCE, and experienced destruction by the Babylonians in the 6th century BCE. The site later became part of the Roman Empire and saw significant development during the Byzantine and Mamluk periods. Archaeological features at Dhiban include defensive walls, towers, temples, and churches, along with a necropolis containing multi-generational burials. Significant water management structures like aqueducts and cisterns highlight the adaptation to its semi-arid environment. Dhiban's rich archaeological record offers profound insights into the cultural and historical dynamics of the region.
