About
Jerash, located in northern Jordan, is one of the most impressive and well-preserved examples of a Greco-Roman city. Its archaeological significance spans several periods, starting from the Neolithic period, with evidence of settlement as early as 7500 BCE. The city was founded as Gerasa during the Hellenistic period and underwent significant development under Roman rule. It features monumental structures such as temples, theatres, and plazas, and it was part of the Decapolis, a league of cities with considerable autonomy. The city thrived during the Byzantine and Umayyad periods, with many religious structures like churches and mosques. Jerash was affected by earthquakes and later saw periods of abandonment before being noted in Ottoman records. Today, it remains a vital historical and cultural site, attracting thousands of visitors annually.
