About
Kharaysin is a significant archaeological site located in the Zarqa River valley of Jordan, primarily associated with the Pre-Pottery Neolithic period. The site, discovered in 1984, spans approximately 25 hectares and features varying topographies, including flat areas and steep slopes. Excavations have revealed multiple occupational layers, with key structures including semi-sunken houses with plaster floors from the Late Pre-Pottery Neolithic A and squared houses from the Early Pre-Pottery Neolithic B. The site also contains straight stone walls and burial contexts from the Middle Pre-Pottery Neolithic B. Material culture from Kharaysin includes distinctive flint artifacts, such as Jericho points and potential human figurines, highlighting its importance in the study of Neolithic technology and ritual practices.
