About

Volubilis is an archaeological site located near Meknes, Morocco, representing a significant Berber-Roman city that flourished under Roman rule. This ancient city, likely established as early as the Neolithic period, expanded significantly after becoming a Roman client state in the 2nd century BCE. It is renowned for its well-preserved ruins, including houses, defensive walls, temples, aqueducts, and public baths. The city was a center of olive oil production, with numerous workshops and food processing areas. Notable public structures include a basilica, marketplace, and the triumphal Arch of Caracalla. Despite falling to local tribes in the 3rd century CE and being abandoned by the 11th century, Volubilis remains a testament to Roman influence on North African urban development, exemplified by its impressive mosaics and monumental architecture.
