About

Kokino is a significant archaeological site located in the Republic of North Macedonia, renowned for its Bronze Age megalithic observatory and ceremonial platforms. Discovered in 2001, the site spans approximately 5000 square meters and is situated atop the Tatićev Kamen summit. It is notable for its unique features, including stone markers used for tracking the Sun and Moon, suggesting its use as an astronomical observatory. Archaeological evidence indicates that the site was occupied from the 19th to the 7th century BCE, with the Middle Bronze Age being the most prominent phase. The presence of vessels filled with offerings suggests a sacred function. Despite its proposal for UNESCO World Heritage status, its nomination was ultimately rejected due to skepticism about its astronomical significance.
