About

Giecz, once a prominent center of early Polish statehood, is a site of significant archaeological interest. Located in Greater Poland, it played a crucial role during the early Middle Ages, serving as a strategic stronghold for the Piast dynasty. Noteworthy features include remnants of a medieval pallatium and a pre-Romanesque rotunda, indicative of its past importance. The site reveals traces of two habitation phases: a 10th-11th century cemetery and an earlier settlement characterized by open earthen structures and hearths. Despite being sacked in 1038 and later destroyed by fire in 1331, Giecz was a hub of administration and trade in the 13th century. Current excavations continue to uncover the layers of its rich history, funded by the Slavia Foundation and the First Piasts Museum.
