Historical Context

About

Kłecko Hillfort, known as Grodzisko Barbara, is an early medieval hillfort dating back to the 10th century, located in Poland. The site consists of an oval-shaped hillfort with preserved dimensions of approximately 40 x 35 meters, surrounded by defensive embankments and a gatehouse. It was strategically established in wetlands on a trading route to Pomerania, making it a significant center for defense and administration within the early Piast state. The site expanded in the late 10th century under Mieszko I's rule. By the 13th century, a small castle was constructed but was later destroyed by the Teutonic Knights in the 14th century. In the 17th century, the wooden church of St. Barbara was built, which is the origin of the site's current name. The site holds significant archaeological value, reflecting the historical and cultural developments of the Polish state.
