About
Al Khor Island, also known as Purple Island, is a significant archaeological site situated in the municipality of Al Khor in Qatar. This island is renowned for its historical association with a Kassite-operated purple dye industry, dating back to the second millennium BCE, marking it as one of the earliest known sites for shellfish dye production. The archaeological evidence spans several periods, including the Early Dilmun, Kassite, Sasanian, and Late Islamic periods, with artifacts such as potsherds and an extensive collection of crushed snail shells. The island's strategic location likely facilitated trade and cultural exchanges with the Dilmun civilization and other regions. Despite the absence of definitive Neolithic occupation evidence, nearby discoveries suggest the island was a site of interest throughout history. The site's significance lies in its diverse cultural artifacts and long history of human activity, highlighting its role in ancient industrial processes and regional trade networks.
