About
Golden Hills, also known as Zolotiye Gorki, is an archaeological site located in southern Russia, near the lower Don River. This site was a significant fortress during the early Middle Ages, likely forming part of a defense network managed by the Khazar Khaganate. The main fortification in this region is thought to have been at Semikarakorsk, situated approximately 20 kilometers east of Golden Hills. Artefacts discovered at the site are consistent with those found at other Saltovo-Mayaki settlements, dating the occupation to the 8th to 10th centuries CE. Excavation efforts began in June 2002, spearheaded by a collaborative team from Rostov State University and the Center for the Study of Eurasian Nomads. These efforts have employed geomagnetic surveys and physical excavation to uncover the site's historical significance, highlighting its role in the Khazar period.
