64.9705° N, 35.6648° E
About
The stone labyrinths of Bolshoi Zayatsky Island, located in the Solovetsky Islands of Russia, are a captivating archaeological site composed of 13 or 14 labyrinths. These structures are made from local boulders arranged in spirals, often featuring dual spirals resembling serpents. The labyrinths, concentrated within a small area of 0.4 square kilometers, are theorized by some researchers to date back 2500 years, although many experts argue they were likely constructed during the Middle Ages. Besides the labyrinths, the island hosts over 850 boulder heaps and various stone settings, potentially used for rituals or as models for fishing equipment. The site provides a glimpse into ancient ritual practices and the symbolic use of stone structures in history.
