About
The R12 cemetery is a significant archaeological site from the Middle Neolithic period, located in the Northern Dongola Reach of modern-day Sudan. Spanning an area of 1400 square meters, the site features an artificial mound containing 166 graves. These graves are notable for their rich and diverse assemblages, including ceramics, lithic tools, and personal adornments such as bead necklaces and stone pendants. The presence of cattle remains and other animal bones indicates the importance of pastoralism in the community. Pottery found at the site shows intricate designs and evidence of everyday use, providing insights into the material culture of the period. The cemetery offers valuable information on social structures, suggesting a relatively egalitarian society with ascribed status. The R12 site contributes to our understanding of Neolithic life in the Nile valley, revealing connections with broader trade networks and early agricultural practices.
