Historical Context

About

Ismantorp Fortress, located on Öland Island in Sweden, is an archaeological site characterized by its impressive limestone defensive walls and its unique layout comprising 95 houses organized into 12 blocks around a central open area. Constructed during the Migration Period around 200 CE, Ismantorp Fortress is the largest and possibly the oldest of the approximately 20 known ringforts on Öland. Despite its formidable construction, the fortress was never permanently occupied and was used sporadically until it was eventually abandoned around 650 CE. The site's well-preserved structure offers valuable insights into the defensive architecture and settlement organization of the time.
