Historical Context

About

The Al Sufouh Archaeological Site in Dubai is a significant example of Early to Middle Bronze Age burial practices in the region, associated with the ancient Magan civilization. Central to the site is an Umm Al-Nar type circular tomb, dating from between 2500 and 2000 BCE, measuring 6.5 meters in diameter. Constructed from unworked stone blocks with a single outer ring wall of well-masoned ashlars, the tomb features dual entrances aligned NE/SW, with an internal dividing wall creating two distinct halves. Each half is further divided into three chambers. Archaeological finds at the site include individual interments in flexed positions accompanied by grave goods such as Umm Al-Nar type ceramic vessels, bronze weaponry, and numerous beads. The site is characterized by concentrations of burnt ash, shell, pottery, and bones, indicating ritual or daily activities of the past inhabitants.
