About
Nymphaion, located on the Crimean shore of the Cimmerian Bosporus, was a prominent city of the Bosporan Kingdom, founded by Greek colonists from Samos between 580 and 560 BCE. The city's strategic location on a rocky cape provided natural defenses, making it a significant military and trade hub in the region. The fertile chernozem soil and favorable climate supported agriculture, particularly cereal trade vital to mainland Greece. Nymphaion's archaeological remains include sophisticated architectural structures, such as the temples of Aphrodite and Demeter, as well as winemaking facilities. The city played a crucial role during the classical period, serving as a military base for Athens and later allying with the Roman Republic during the Mithridatic Wars. Nymphaion's importance is further evidenced by inscriptions honoring Roman Emperor Augustus.
