About
Ostriv Velykyi Potomkin, a river island within the Dnipro River in Ukraine, holds significant archaeological and historical importance. Strategically located along the historic route from the Varangians to the Greeks, it was an important settlement site for the Kyivan Rus' as a primary Black Sea port. Archaeological evidence supports habitation during this period. In the 14th century, it became a trading post for the Republic of Genoa, emphasizing its role in regional trade networks. The island's strategic importance continued into the 18th century when it was annexed by the Russian Empire following the annexation of the Crimean Khanate. During World War II, it served as a base for Ukrainian partisans. In contemporary history, the island has witnessed conflict during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, highlighting its ongoing strategic significance.
