About
Mizdarkhan, located in Karakalpakstan, Uzbekistan, is an archaeological site and necropolis with a rich history dating back to the 4th century BCE. It was an important city in the Khorezm region, second only to Konye Urgench, and functioned as a vital religious and cultural center. The site demonstrates a fusion of Zoroastrian and Islamic traditions, with evidence of fire-worship and later Islamic burial practices. Despite Timur's devastating campaigns in the 14th century CE, which led to the city's destruction and eventual depopulation, Mizdarkhan remains a significant site with its mausoleums, fortress ruins, and religious structures like the fire temple and mosque. The necropolis also holds a legendary association with the biblical figure Adam, enhancing its sacred status.
