Historical Context

About

Varakhsha, an ancient city in the Bukhara oasis of Sogdia, was established in the 1st century BCE and served as the capital of the Sogdian dynasty known as the Bukhar Khudahs. The city's strategic location 39 kilometers northwest of Bukhara contributed to its prominence. Despite its historical significance, Varakhsha never fully recovered after the Muslim conquest of Transoxiana. Archaeological investigations have revealed murals from the 8th century CE within the palace area, showcasing vibrant depictions of a king and his entourage engaged in activities such as riding elephants and battling tigers and mythical creatures. These artistic relics highlight the cultural and political milieu of the time, offering insights into the region's rich heritage.
