About

The archaeological site of Borsh in the Albanian Riviera is an ancient coastal settlement with a rich history of fortification and cultural change. It was part of the Chaonian fortification system in the ancient region of Epirus and saw significant activity during the Hellenistic period. The site features a castle that was refortified by Emperor Justinian in the 6th century CE and later became known as Sopotos during the Despotate of Epirus period. It experienced turbulent times with changes of control between the Normans, Turks, and Venetians. The fortifications were renovated by Ali Pasha Tepelena in the 19th century, and remnants of a mosque and theological school indicate the area's Islamic influence. Borsh is notable for its strategic location and its role in the region's complex historical narrative.
