About
Miliana, located in northwestern Algeria, is a site of significant historical importance with its roots tracing back to ancient Roman times when it was known as Zucchabar. This city was an established Roman colonia under Augustus, later becoming a Christian episcopal see. The city witnessed various periods of occupation, including the Muslim Conquest and the establishment of a medina by Buluggin ibn Ziri in the 10th century. It served as a cultural and intellectual hub during the medieval Muslim period, with notable scholars residing there. The city later underwent several conquests, including those by the Almoravids and the French in the 19th century. Archaeologically, Miliana features a blend of Roman and medieval Islamic structures, including orchards, gardens, and a mosque, reflecting its rich historical layers.
