About

The Ruins of Quilmes is an archaeological site located in the Calchaquí Valleys of Tucumán Province, Argentina. It is recognized as the largest pre-Columbian settlement in the country, covering an area of approximately 30 hectares. Dating back to around 850 CE, the site was inhabited by the Quilmes people, who were known for their complex social structures and resistance against Inca and Spanish influences. At its peak, the settlement was home to an estimated 5,000 inhabitants. The Quilmes constructed their village with a layout that likely included domestic and communal spaces, adapted to the arid environment of the region. The site offers valuable insights into the life and organization of indigenous societies in pre-Columbian South America.
