About

Pundranagar, located in present-day Mahasthan, Bogra, Bangladesh, was an influential city in ancient Bengal, serving as a major administrative, religious, and cultural hub from the 3rd century BCE to the 12th century CE. The city is characterized by its well-planned layout, including defensive walls, moats, and ramparts that enclosed a vibrant urban center with palaces, residential quarters, assembly halls, and religious structures such as temples and monasteries. Archaeological evidence, including Northern Black Polished Ware and terracotta plaques, points to its prosperity during various historical periods, notably under the Maurya, Gupta, and Pala empires. The city's strategic location along the Karatoya River facilitated trade and communication, contributing to its historical importance. However, with the Muslim conquests in the 13th century, Pundranagar was eventually abandoned and fell into decline.
