About
Tatul is an archaeological site of significant historical and cultural importance, located in the Eastern Rhodopes region of southern Bulgaria. The site features an ancient Thracian sanctuary and tomb, attributed to an influential leader who was later deified. Archaeological evidence suggests continuous use from as early as 4000 BCE, with structures including temples, altars, and a mausoleum. The site's religious significance is further highlighted by its connection to the cult of Orpheus. Over time, the site evolved with the construction of defensive structures like stone walls and towers. It underwent significant changes during the Christianization of the region in the 4th century CE, transforming into a domain with defensive features. Despite suffering from earthquakes in the 12th century BCE and 14th century CE, Tatul remains an invaluable resource for understanding Thracian civilization.
