About
The archaeological sites of Angkor Borei and Phnom Da in southern Cambodia are significant for their rich historical and cultural legacy, dating back to the ancient Funan civilization. Angkor Borei is believed to have been an early capital, showing evidence of continuous human settlement from as early as 1523 BCE. Excavations have revealed a complex array of structures including potential moats, temples, and a cemetery containing over 60 bodies from 200 BCE to 400 CE, highlighting diverse cultural practices and interactions. Phnom Da, a nearby granite outcrop, hosts some of the oldest surviving temples and Khmer stone statues, attributed to the reign of King Rudravarman in the 6th century CE. These sites illustrate the fusion of Southeast Asian culture with Hindu and Buddhist influences, reflected in the art, inscriptions, and architectural styles. Despite modern challenges like looting and site habitation, Angkor Borei and Phnom Da continue to be invaluable for understanding the development of early Southeast Asian civilizations.
