Historical Context

About

Prohear is an Early Iron Age archaeological site located in the Prey Veng province of Cambodia. Predominantly a burial site, it features a remarkable collection of grave goods, including numerous artifacts made from precious metals such as gold and silver. These items suggest a high level of craftsmanship and indicate that Prohear was once part of extensive trade networks across Southeast Asia. The burials, dated between 150 BCE and 50 CE, reveal social distinctions, with wealthier individuals interred with more lavish goods. Despite poor preservation of human remains, dental analysis has provided insights into the health and lifestyle of the population. The site's discovery in 2007 followed significant looting, but subsequent rescue excavations have contributed valuable information to the understanding of Iron Age Southeast Asia.
