About

San Pedro de Atacama, located in Chile's Antofagasta Region, is an archaeological site of significant historical interest, known for its pre-Columbian origins. The Atacameños, the area's first inhabitants, established a settlement around an oasis on the Puna de Atacama plateau. These inhabitants developed intricate basketwork and pottery crafts, which are now part of the local cultural heritage. During the Late Post-Classical Period, the region experienced significant cultural exchanges and developments. San Pedro de Atacama came under Chilean control during the War of the Pacific in the 19th century. The area is rich in archaeological findings, showcased in the R. P. Gustavo Le Paige Archaeological Museum, attracting tourists and researchers interested in the pre-Columbian cultures of South America.
