About

The Qianling Mausoleum, located in Shaanxi Province, China, is a significant Tang dynasty burial site constructed in 684 CE. This mausoleum houses the remains of Emperor Gaozong and Empress Wu Zetian, China's only female emperor. The site is renowned for its elaborate stone statues and rich mural paintings that adorn the tombs' subterranean walls. The complex includes the main tumulus mound and underground tombs, with 17 attendant tombs. Five of these have been excavated, revealing rich artifacts and offering insights into Tang dynasty burial practices. The site also features a spirit way lined with stone statues representing various figures, including foreign diplomats, underscoring the Tang dynasty's cultural and political reach. The preservation efforts have limited further excavations to protect the site from damage, maintaining its historical integrity.
