About
Altes Lager, located near Menzlin in Western Pomerania, Germany, is an archaeologically significant site known for its role as a Viking trading post during the 9th century CE. Situated on the banks of the river Peene, this site was strategically important for trade across the Baltic region. The settlement spanned approximately 18 hectares and featured remnants of a bridge, suggesting robust transportation and communication operations. The site is particularly noted for its burial grounds, where graves of women were discovered, adhering to Scandinavian customs of stone ship and stone circle burials. Artifacts found here trace origins as far as Ireland and the Baltic lands, indicating extensive trade connections. The site's historical significance lies in its depiction of Viking and Slavic interactions during the Viking Age.
