About
Rochlitz Castle, located in the Free State of Saxony, Germany, is a notable medieval structure with a rich architectural and historical significance. Originally erected as an imperial castle in the late 10th century, it became a possession of the Wettin margraves in 1143. Its Romanesque architectural elements have been preserved through various remodelings, including a significant transformation into a margravial schloss in the late 14th century. The castle served multiple roles over the centuries, including a secondary residence and hunting lodge for the Wettin family. From the 18th century, it functioned as an administrative center, later converting into a prison in 1852. The site now houses a museum, reflecting its evolving uses and historical importance.
