About

The Maros Regency in Indonesia is an archaeologically significant area known for its prehistoric rock art found in the caves of the region. Notably, the Timpuseng cave contains a hand stencil estimated to be over 39,000 years old, making it one of the oldest known examples of cave art in the world. Accompanying this is a depiction of a female babirusa from around 35,000 years ago. These artworks were created by blowing red pigment around hands pressed on rock surfaces, illustrating early artistic expression. The caves, surrounded by distinctive karst formations, are being considered for inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage list due to their cultural and historical value. This site provides critical insights into the early artistic endeavors of humans in Asia, contemporaneous with similar developments in Europe.
