About
Nishapur, located in northeastern Iran, is a city with a rich archaeological and historical background that spans several centuries. Founded in the 3rd century CE by Shapur I, it served as a significant political and economic center throughout the Islamic Golden Age. Notable as the capital of the Tahirid and Seljuk dynasties, Nishapur was a hub of cultural and commercial activity along the Silk Road. The city endured devastation during the Mongol invasions in 1221 CE but was revived under the Ilkhanate. Its ruins today include ancient mosques, mausoleums, and turquoise mines, which are of great archaeological interest. The city’s layers reveal a complex history of conquest, revival, and cultural significance, making it a vital site for understanding the broader historical dynamics of the Greater Khorasan region.
