The city boasts evidence of settlements dating back to the 70th millennium BCE, discovered in the Hutto cave. Sari has been identified with Zadracarta, a city of Hyrcania noted by ancient Greek sources. It has served as a crucial cultural and political center throughout its history, notably during the Sassanid dynasty when it was a regional capital. Sari experienced significant developments during the Tabaristan era under the Dabuyid dynasty, and later under the Safavid and Qajar dynasties.
