About
Tell Madhur is an archaeological site located in the Diyala Governorate of Iraq, notable for its exceptional preservation of an Ubaid period house, a feature rarely found in such condition across Mesopotamia. The settlement mound, measuring 100 by 80 meters and rising 2.5 meters above the plain, provides insight into several occupation phases. The Ubaid house, with its rectangular mudbrick construction and tripartite layout, was preserved almost completely due to a destructive fire, which remarkably left artefacts in situ. The site also reveals significant Early Dynastic occupation with unique round buildings typical of the Hamrin region, pointing to a culturally distinct enclave. Later periods are marked by burial and storage features, including an Akkadian grave with equid skeletons and medieval storage pits, indicating varied uses over millennia.
