About
Acre, located on Israel’s northern coastal plain, has a rich archaeological history dating back to the Early Bronze Age. It has served as a significant port city and strategic military location throughout its history, with periods of occupation and destruction under various empires, including the Egyptians, Romans, Crusaders, and Mamluks. Acre's well-preserved archaeological features include defensive walls, fortresses, and religious structures such as churches and mosques. It was a crucial hub during the Crusades and later became a thriving center under Ottoman rule. Today, Acre is recognized for its historical significance and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its diverse cultural influences and extensive archaeological remains.
