About
Belvoir Castle, also known as Kochav HaYarden or Kawkab al-Hawa, is a significant archaeological site located in northern Israel. Constructed by the Knights Hospitaller in 1168 CE, it stands as one of the best-preserved Crusader castles in the region. Strategically positioned on the Issachar Plateau, it served as a formidable defensive structure against eastern incursions into the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem. The castle's design, featuring a concentric layout with robust towers and a protective moat, exemplifies advanced military architecture of the Late Post-Classical Period. Over its history, Belvoir Castle has witnessed key historical events, including the Battle of Belvoir Castle and its subsequent siege and surrender to Saladin's forces. Today, it serves as a testament to the region's turbulent past and its architectural ingenuity.
